Game Review
Atlético Madrid secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Deportivo Alavés in their La Liga clash on Sunday, 18 January 2026. The match, held at Atlético's home ground, saw the hosts edge out their opponents thanks to a solitary goal from Alexander Sørloth (GAP +3.0%) early in the second half. This result was largely anticipated given Atlético's superior form and league position compared to Alavés. The decisive moment came in the 48th minute when Sørloth found the back of the net, capitalizing on a well-executed team move. This goal was enough to secure all three points for Atlético, who managed to maintain their defensive solidity throughout the match. Jan Oblak (GAP +5.8%) played a crucial role in goal, ensuring a clean sheet with several key saves. In terms of lineup changes, Atlético Madrid made five substitutions during the match, bringing in Nahuel Molina, Antoine Griezmann, Robin Le Normand, Álex Baena, and Koke. These changes were likely tactical adjustments by the home team manager to maintain control and manage player fatigue. Deportivo Alavés also made four substitutions, introducing Lucas Boyé, Denis Suárez, Abde Rebbach, and Ander Guevara, as they sought to find an equalizer. Marcos Llorente (GAP +5.6%) was another standout performer for Atlético, contributing significantly to both defensive and attacking phases. His work rate and ability to transition play were vital in maintaining Atlético's dominance in midfield. The result sees Atlético Madrid continue their strong run in La Liga, consolidating their position near the top of the table. For Deportivo Alavés, this defeat adds pressure as they look to climb out of the lower half of the standings. The away team will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming fixtures to improve their league position. Post-match reactions highlighted the importance of Sørloth's goal and the solid defensive display by Atlético. The home team manager praised the team's resilience and ability to secure a win in a tightly contested match.

What is GAP?
What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?
Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.
What is GAP?
GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
